Sabine Lake fly and conventional tackle fishing reports & photos

Got a few pictures from TP & W of the Bay Team Flounder round up.
Hopefully I may get some more with Flounder in them.
The weather is still kicking us here on Sabine Lake. We got another 5 inches or more of rain last night and early this morning.
The cold front has started blowing in today with 15 mph winds from the North. Hopefully it will push a lot of this water out of the rivers and bay. Looks like Sunday will be the best day as far as the wind goes. Predicted 7 mph and variable?I will try to get out and see how bad the water looks and do some scouting.

Got to fish for about an hour after work today. The water is still high and muddy. The water coming out of the Louisiana marsh was dark & clear. I fished a back eddy where the two water colums merged . I caught a small Red fish and broke another fish off. It felt like a flounder but never saw it. I was using a DOA chartruse 3/8 oz lead head dressed with a glow curl tail grub tipped with a peice of fish bites.
Just wanted to see what the water conditions looked like in Blacks bayou.
I'm still hearing of local anglers catching fish in spite of the turbid water.

We have received over a foot of rain in the past 7 days. I was sure the fishing would suffer from all of the runoff. To my great pleasure local anglers are still catching fish. The bite is a little bit tuffer with the water clarity but the fish are still there.
I fished the TP&W Flounder round up Saturday and saw many nice sized Flounder donated to the stocking program.
I was told by TP&W that 47 Flounder were donated from 6:00am to 12:00pm when the event ended. There were aprox.10- 2 person teams that fished.I thought it was a good bite because you had to sign up at 6:00am and be back at the tent by 12:00pm. That doesn't leave much time to fish. I was able to donate 3 -16" Flounder to the program. I did catch one nice 25" Red fish and a 14" Speckled trout. The Trout surprised me because I was so far back in the marsh that was flushed with fresh water.
I caught my fish using a 3/8 oz. Chartreuse D.O.A. jig head dressed with a Berkeley power shrimp. I also used a 4" glow curl tail grub. Each rig was tipped with a shrimp flavor fish bite strip.
The live bait was hard to come by so most of the participants used artificial bait to catch their Flounder.
The good fortune kept on coming when my name was drawn for the Shimano Calcutta/TTF rod& reel combo. It was a $300 value. There was also a Boga grip weigh scale and a Garmin GPS. unit given away for anglers that donated fish. There was also a drawing for anglers that didn't catch a Flounder. It was a Shimano Castaic reel, a $170 value.
I don't have any fish pictures, at the donation station TP&W never removed the Flounder from the live wells. They placed a black bag in the water and scooped them up then deposited them in the big fish tank trailer.I am supposed to get some pictures from TP&W next week of the event so maybe I can post them.

Tthe weather man forecast 7 mph winds so I headed to the South end of the lake at 7:30am.
The wind was blowing12 mph right down the lake and it was ruff. When I got to the fishing area I had a hard time standing on the bow of the boat it was so ruff. There were a few gulls working so I thought it may have been worth the run,NOT! The 1st cast was with a D.O.A. popping cork, a few twitches and BAM an over sized Red inhaled the cork! It took a lot of drag then it let go and then it ate the plastic and the fight was on again. All to soon the line parted and I got the remains of the popping cork back. I'm going to have to scrap this one. I thought it's going to be a great day.
After that the only thing I could catch was under sized Speckled trout and sand trout while fighting the waves.
Finally around noon the wind started to lay and I could use the fly rod. I found some gulls resting on the water and caught some good sized Sand trout and small specks under them.
I fished this pattern the rest of the day until 3:30pm. The last set of gulls had some really big sand trout and one nice Speck under them.
The picture shows the sand trout that went 1 1/2 lb and 1 1/4 lb. on the boga the Speck was 2 lb. They all ate a #1 clouser fished on Orvis 200 grain depth charge sinking line in 7 to 8 foot of water on a 6 wt rod.All in all it was a good day on the water but if the wind had layed 1st thing in the morning it could have been spectacular.
It's back to work tomorrow, vacation was good and I caught a lot of fish.

My son and I were hoping the wind would die down enough to run to the South end of the lake this morning but we were blown out again at 8:00 am. We did make a drift on the North end behind rabbit island but the wind was still tuff there and getting stronger.
We did manage this one nice trout on a bone she pup. I had 3 more blow ups but couldn't get a hook up. Preston tried soft plastic under a popping cork but never got the 1st strike.
We retreated to the river and gave bait fishing a try. Live shad and finger mullet never drew the 1st fish. The full moon and the high wind just did us in. We hung it up at 12:00pm.
By 5:00pm today the wind looks like it had died down some. Hopefully it will stay down for Sunday and Monday.
By the way, Dutch our German short haired pointer puppy wound up with the She pup through her lip. I kept telling her to leave the bait alown because when it bites back it won't let go.
She found out the hard way but it was an easy release. I just cut the bend of the hook off. Thankfully only one hooh stuck and it was a through and through.

10/6/2006 Got blown off the water today after a quick bite on the north end of the lake.
The 5-10 mph wind was blowing 15mph by 9:00am
I hit the lake at 8:00am and had 4 solid keeper trout in less than 20 min. using bone diamond soft plastic under a popping cork.
It's funny, yesterday morning there wasn't a bird to be found on the North end and this morning the North end was nothing but birds working over trout chasing shrimp. The bite was short lived though, the wind was blowing straight down the lake. The bait fishermen are doing well fishing the river when the wind shuts the lake down.
Hopefully the wind will die off for Saturday, my son wants to head South and try for a Spanish Mackerel.

Started the day on the North end of Sabine lake at 8:00am.
There wasn't much activity except for one large Gafftop and one small speckled trout.
Around 11:00am I headed to the South end of the lake. I should have gone there first.
There were birds and shrimp hopping on the surface. I caught so many Speckled trout I lost count. Most were under sized but on the 6 wt. fly rod they are fun.
The high light of the day was a 18" Spanish mackerel that hit a bead chain eye Chartruse clouser on the 6 wt. I thing some smoke came off my fingers when it first hit! That was supper when I got home.

Fished Bessie Heights today from 9:00am to 4:00pm
The high tide never really did any thing and the water is still murky. The water temp. has dropped and that can only help things.
I did manage two nice reds on my Orvis T3, 8 wt. rod using a spoon fly.
They were 22 inches and 3 1/2 lb. and 24 inches and 4 1/2 lb.
The effects of the salt water intrusion from Rita are still hanging on.
There is no submerged grass on any of the flats that I have been on.
This is the only reason I can find for the lack of Red fish in the estuary.
I was hoping by this time of the year some grass would start to show, but I haven't found it if it's there.
There are a few fish on the flats but they are few and far between. I saw a total of 5 fish today.
This is an improvement from the last few times I have been on the flats.

Fished Sabine lake this morning until 10:30am when a thunder storm drove us off the lake.
The trout are going crazy on the lake.
I caught around 30 Speckled trout and some large sand trout mixed in using fly fishing tackle.
The Trout were eating #1 clousers in chartruse and olive dalburg divers.
When fishing the Dalburg the trout would explode out of the water from under the bait and fly clear of the surface a good 8 inches.
I also used spinning tackle and a D.O.A popping cork with a 1/8 oz lead head dressed with a bone diamond colored soft plastic about 2 1/2 foot under the cork with great success.
There were a lot of 14 inch trout caught but there were also some solid keepers mixed in with them.
It dosen't get much better than this.
Give me a call or email me if you want to catch a lot of fish, nows the time.
