Sabine Lake fly and conventional tackle fishing reports & photos

2/26/07
Spent Saturday at the Houston Orvis store on Westheimer. As usual the fellows at the store were great. I got to visit and talk fishing with a lot of people. I talked so much I had a sore throat by the end of the day.
I bought a 5 wt. mid flex rod to use on the schoolie trout and lady fish this summer. I think I will try it out on the Sheeps heads also, it should be fun with the light action rod. I also took home a new Zero "G" rod. It's an 8 wt. mid flex. My "T3" 8 wt. was great. The Zero "G" is supposed to be even better.
I didn't fish Sunday, I had to make hay while the sun shines. The biggest part of the job is now behind me. A little back fill dirt and I can start to build the deck and and walk ways.
When fishing season really kicks off in a month I should be ready for it.

I haven't fished over the past 2 weeks. I am in the middle of replacing my bulkhead.
I will be at the Orvis store on Westheimer in Houston this Saturday, 2/24/2007.
I will be presenting a slide show at 11:00am about fly fishing the Sabine lake area.
Hopefully I can get on the water Sunday. I should keep working on the bulkhead until it's finished but I need a break!
The word on fishing is the Trout and small Reds are still on the Louisiana shore line. Soft plastic and suspending plugs are the producers. The bite can be feast or famine.

I made it out on the water today, a little later than planed but I still got 4 hours in.
First thing I saw while running down Cow bayou was a Bob cat swimming across the bayou.
There must have been some thing really good on the other side as the water temp. was 47F.
Got over to Johnson bayou at 1:30 pm. and backlashed on the first cast! I had switched from a light bait to a heavy catch V and forgot to reset the spool tension, I did manage to get the overrun out of the reel and started fishing.
There were several boats in the area and naturally there was one right where I wanted to start at. The water was49F on one side of the bayou and 50F on the other but I didn't draw any strikes. I moved on South to another spot and found water that was 51F with a few mullet showing every now and then. I fished around shallows the then moved out to about 4 foot and stuck a really nice sow trout. I had the drag set very light but just as I brought her along side the boat to land her the hook tore loose form her mouth. She layed there for a second on her side. Beautiful purple hues with black spots silver sides shining. The water was clear enough to see her big fangs protruding from that big beautiful yellow mouth. She looked to be a solid 5 pounder. I fished the area hard but couldn't get bit again. I moved on down to the Gator hole and had a rat red take the catch V but it came unhooked at the boat also. I don't know what gives with the lost fish but I hope it's over for a while. The water is muddy but some places had a foot of visibility. This time of year you fish all day for that one big fish, I was fortunate to get bit and to see the fish. I would have liked to photograph her but maybe next time. I am just happy to have gotten out and enjoyed the outdoors. I did get to see two hog's walking the shore line and a Loon swimming on the way back home.

Between the rain, work and getting my income tax documents all together I haven't fished in a while.
The weather is still crummy but I have read and heard that the big sow trout are prowling the flats of Sabine lake. It doesn't surprise me very much except for the water clarity being so muddy.
This is the time of year when the trophy trout start taking mullet imitation plugs in the afternoons when the sun warms the shallows, if you want to call 52F warm. Just that little bit of temperature difference can make or break you.
Catch V's, K2000, crazy croakers and Corkys are go to baits but red shad assassins on 1/8 lead heads will take fish also. If fly fishing, big decivers or large bait fish immitations will take trout and reds also. The key is to slow down the retrieve. Wade fishing allows a n angler to cover a certain area of water effectively. You can fish from a boat but you really have to pay attention and keep it slow when working a flat.
I'll be in Houston Saturday tying flies and talking fishing. Hopefully Sunday I can get out and give the big trout a shot.
