Between the rain, work and getting my income tax documents all together I haven't fished in a while.
The weather is still crummy but I have read and heard that the big sow trout are prowling the flats of Sabine lake. It doesn't surprise me very much except for the water clarity being so muddy.
This is the time of year when the trophy trout start taking mullet imitation plugs in the afternoons when the sun warms the shallows, if you want to call 52F warm. Just that little bit of temperature difference can make or break you.
Catch V's, K2000, crazy croakers and Corkys are go to baits but red shad assassins on 1/8 lead heads will take fish also. If fly fishing, big decivers or large bait fish immitations will take trout and reds also. The key is to slow down the retrieve. Wade fishing allows a n angler to cover a certain area of water effectively. You can fish from a boat but you really have to pay attention and keep it slow when working a flat.
I'll be in Houston Saturday tying flies and talking fishing. Hopefully Sunday I can get out and give the big trout a shot.
Tight lines, Mike
