We hit the flats today in search of Red fish on the Louisiana side of the river.
The flats look in good shape, better than I thought after Rita came through.
It almost looks like the marsh is healing it's self with the scattered grass clumps taking root and breaking up some of the wide open areas. We had plenty of water today but way to much wind and hardly any sun shine before noon. We only saw one red working a grass line busting some bait, but we never got a shot at it. The bait really hasn't moved onto the flats yet and the water is still chilly. Hopefully by this time next month things will change.
We stopped by a Flounder spot at noon on the way back home only to find the Speckled trout feeding in the area. We boated five keepers from 15" to 17" in an hours time. I wish we would have been there at 11:00am. because the bite stopped at 1:00pm. I'm sure we could have gotten a limit if we had started at the top of the bite. The trout liked D.O.A. key lime shad tails rigged on 1/4 oz. D.O.A. chartreuse lead heads swam just off the bottom in 6 foot of water.
Tight lines,
Mike

Finally got out on the water today and did some scouting in the marsh. The tide was exceptionally low as you can see in the picture. I saw several good pushes from fish in the shallows but I didn't actually see what type fish it was. I'm sure it was either Reds or Sheep's heads.

I was pleased to see several patches of under water grasses growing on a large flat. The whole area I was in has been changed by Hurricane Rita since the last time I got to enter this area.

There are lots of clumps of marsh grasses broken off with large clumps of mud attached pushed out onto the open flats. The cuts I use to get back into this area have a lot of silt that's filled it in some what, but it's still navigable with the gatortail motor and the BeaverTail skiff. When the tide comes back in to a normal level there shouldn't be any problem fishing the area.

Tight lines,
Mike
