Wind wind and more wind!

Seems like when the wind isn't blowing the thunder storms are popping!

Been off a week and have only fished 3 times. I took care of some important issues then fished when it wasn't storming. I did go over to the GatorTail factory East of Lafayette Louisiana and test ran a bigger 12 inch prop and had the motor settings adjusted Thursday. Thanks to Kyle and Hoyt for the extra customer service way after the sale. Check them out at http://www.gator-tail.com/.

The relentless wind had had us pinned down to the east shore line of Sabine lake for the past week. If we can see signs of activity we can catch fish but staying with them even with a drift sock and trolling motor is a struggle. The Trout I have caught are solid keepers with a few school trout mixed in. Also, there are a lot of Gafftops mixed in with the Trout. They give a solid pull but the slime factor is at 100%.

Glow/ chartreuse and LSU color plastic shad tails under a DOA popping cork got bit. Straight lead only drew an occasional strike.

On another note, our dog Dutch turned a year old today. I know she is a upland bird dog but she had made a very good fishing dog also. She had her first close encounter with an Alligator Wednesday. Hopefully this is as close as she will ever get again.

Tight lines and remember what Memorial day is really about,

Mike

The weather man said "good weather this weekend with light winds" so I hit the lake at 7:00am. The waves were white capped on the North end of the lake with the wind from the W/NWest. I elected to run down to the mid to lower section of the lake on the West side and get out of the wind. I found little activity but did pick up a few throw backs. I kept working South and wound up in the mid lake area near garrison ridge and found a few gulls circling a small area. There were Trout and gafftops feeding below. The trout were just legal at 15". I worked the area and moved back further East along the Louisiana side and found the water to be much cleaner than up north and better than the West side. Preston has a ball game at 10:45am so I start working back home. On the way back I found slicks forming on the surface as the wind had started to die down and conditions were looking better by the minuet. I caught more gafftops but there were some Trout mixed in. This nice Speck pictured was the last fish of the day. It was a little over 22", wish I could have stayed longer in the area but kids are only kids for a short time so I called it a day.I was a little late for the game but I got to see Preston score.

All the fish came from under a DOA rattle popping cork. Soft plastic suspended 24" under the cork with a DOA Chrt. lead head and root beer/Chrt. shad tails. Other colors that worked were glow/Chrt. and Bone diamond. I had one strike with out the popping cork and missed it.

Hopefully I can get out on the flats tomorrow and do some fly fishing.

Tight lines, Mike
