A great day on the water
Things finally came togather this weekend. I still have a little congestion left over from the bug I had last weekend but I am feeling great, the weather finally worked it's way into a beautiful day, the tide was moving when we were fishing, the wind laid down to a light breeze and the fish were hungry! My buddy Dale and I made a run into Bessie Heights marsh just to see what was going on and what the conditions were like. We started on the South end and found muddy looking water on the flats and in the river. There was a lot of mullet in the shallows closer to deep water. We Fished the flats and along the channel that runs through it but couldn't draw any strikes. We decided to run to the middle section of Bessie and fish this deeper cut that the flats run off into. The tide was really ripping out as we fished the deeper water structure of the cut but still couldn't find any fish. I decided to move closer to the flats and the shallower warmer water that was spilling into the cut. I started casting a rootbeer/Chart. D.O.A. shad tail pinned to a 1/4 lead head onto the flat and draging it off into the deeper water. It wasn't long before I got a solid thump telegraphed up the line through the rod that produced a solid 2-1/4 lb. Speckled trout. We fished the break that was about 100yards long from 2:00pm tp 3:30pm and boated eight trout up to 3-1/2 lb. This 3-1/2lb Sow had only one eye. She must be a real surviver to make this size with only one eye. We only had one trout that wouldn't make 15 inches, the rest were mostly 2 lb. We also boated 6 Flounder using the same lures. The only thing was the Flounder were in the 10 inch size but it was good to see so many juvenile fish in the system. We thought for sure one of us would get a Sabine slam but we never had the 1st Red fish on? The bite shut down as soon as the tide started slowing down. The tide looked to have dropped 2 foot today. I have to brag on the GatorTail motor. We had ran across the flats that were already very shallow to get to our final fishing spot. Instead of leaving the long way back to the ramp I ran back the short way we came in. As we exited a very narrow cut that leads to deeper water I was startled to see only mud and no water for about 100 yards before the water even started! I held on to the poling platform and pointed the boat in the right direction. We skated right across the mud flat like a Penguin belly sliding on ice! Those guys at GatorTail have really done their home work. I'm almost convinced if it rained for 2 weeks and my yard was real soft the motor would push the boat across it! I really got a kick out of going muding in the boat and catching those nice trout today, I'm still grinning.
