Preston and I decided it was time to get back out on the water together and see what is going on around Sabine lake "our world". As soon as we reached the Sabine river we could see the LNG pipe line work going on on the Louisiana shore line. We headed South towards the lake and were saddened to see that one of our favorite swimming and fishing spots has been obliterated due to the construction. The spot was the subject of a recent school writing assignment Preston had. He referred to it as point island due to the fact there was a large grove of tall pines that grew on the point of the island. I knew it as the pines or community hole. Well it's history now. The shore behind picture of the barge with the pipes is now a flat work site where the pines once stood. I could feel the hurt in Preston's voice when he spoke of the good times we had had there over the past 9 years, "I hate progress some times". As we motored on out in the lake we could see the big drag lines mounted on barges digging their way across the lake. There has been pilings driven along the route of the line from one end of the lake to the other. Caution is needed when running in limited visibility conditions as it seems there is a new navigational hazard popping up every day. We started fishing on the North end of the lake in coffee ground cove with water temperatures at 66F and very muddy, we had no strikes so we headed South in search of cleaner water. We stopped near Garrison ridge to find the water still muddy but maybe not quite as bad. There were some small blue fish destroying the millions of tiny shad that were in the area but we still couldn't find any trout. We rode around some more enjoying the sunny and mild conditions as we worked our way back towards home. We stopped and fished the barrier islands on the North end and were blessed with a nice slot sized Red fish that ate a Catch 5 in about a foot of water. The water there was the warmest we had found all day at a scorching 77F. I really thought the trout would be around or at least some more reds but we couldn't draw another strike? I really enjoyed the quality time I had with Preston today on the water. I really didn't care if we caught fish today or not we just wanted to get back out on the water together and enjoy the beautiful day we had been blessed with. Looks like Sabine lake will need a little more time to clear up. Hopefully the pipe line won't be a factor in the water clarity this year. From what I have heard Big lake is the better choice right now for trout.
