Sabine Lake fly and conventional tackle fishing reports & photos

Tricked by the weather againI expected to wake up to gale force winds and rain this morning but that wasn't the case. The wind was almost non existent but there were threatening rain clouds and a heavy over cast. I checked the local radar and saw there were a few showers over Sabine lake but not much behind it. I decided to hold off for the showers to pass and went to get gas so I could top off the boat gas tank. Well by the time I got ready to leave the wind had picked up and the clouds looked even worse than an hour earlier. Preston and I decided to give it a shot any way. As we reached the Sabine river the waves were already white capping up the river. We decided to seek refuge from the strong wind and fish Blacks bayou. We fished Blacks with out any success for 2 hours. Preston had the only close call today, an Eastern King bird saw his Horny toad splashing across the water and swooped down to try an catch it, we got a good laugh out of it. The tide was high and rushing in. The positive side was the clarity was fairly good for a change and we did get to see a lot of bird life.
Later today Preston had a baseball game at 4:30pm. Right before the game the wind laid and the sun came out, just our luck. I wish I had gotten up at day light now and ran to the Louisiana shore line and fished until the wind picked up. Oh well the weather man strikes again. I wonder if the forecast will hold true for Sunday and rain like crazy or will the sun shine?

4/20/2008--Preston is still the Bass Master
Later this evening after my initial post Preston noticed some feeding activity behind our house in the boat slip. He got out his fishing pole and tied on a 1/8 oz. beetle spin dressed with a sparkle beetle body. He told me he had noticed a ball of small shad near our boat ramp that had gotten pushed to the surface. Preston told me he remembered me telling him how feeding fish will round up bait and push them to the surface, apparently he does listen some times! Any way he matched the hatch and caught this small bass after the 1st cast. I came over to see what all the shouting was about and made a few cast with the sparkle beetle my self. I had one short strike but that was it. Preston rules with these small bass behind the house. Try as I might I only catch one on rare occasions. Hey, we did get fish on our hands today after all!

Work, Work and more over time. The is our plant shut down time of the year for me. 12 hour shifts and unscheduled over time has been the norm for the last 2 weeks. Then there is the clean up that follows. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and hopefully there will be more time to fish until next years plant turn around . I got an uplifting fishing report from a good friend,Dickie Colburn. He and Gene Lock caught a mess of 2 to 3 pound trout on the Louisiana shore line last Thursday and Johnny Cormier caught some on Wednesday. Looks like we maybe turning the corner on Sabine lake finally. I guess it was good timing for me since the fishing had been poor to say the least during my extended hours at work. Hopefully next week I can get back in the routine and spend more time on the water than at work.

4/5/2008 Poor Conditions but I just had to go
The wind is blowing from the North at 15 mph and forecast to increase to 25 mph. There is a heavy blanket of clouds keeping the sun from shining through but my son Preston and I have the itch to fish so we headed out any way. I figured we would just fish the old Cow bayou section from the power lines out to the river and stay out of the winds as best we could. We fished Horny toads and a Red fish magic spinner bait dressed with a Root Beer D.O.A. shad tail. Preston had a fish strike his Horny Toad but the hook missed it's mark. I switched to the spinner bait and found it to the liking of the Bass and Red fish. We never boated a keeper fish but we did manage several Bass and a couple of Rat Reds to our pleasure. The water has warmed up some but is still very muddy. The marsh cane helped break the high wind today and made fishing the poor conditions a little bit more bearable. The sun tried to break through later in the day but didn't show until we were back home. There is some water coming down the Sabine river from Toledo Bend Res. in the next day or so. Hopefully it will flush some of this muddy water out and allow the conditions to improve. I haven't gotten any good reports of Trout from Sabine lake as of late but if the water clears up some that should change soon.
