Beautiful weather for a change
I had the privilege of fishing with Steve Robinson his son Regan and his friend John today. We got an early start but the Trout didn't really do any thing until around 8:00am. The bite was sporadic with birds working then moving off as soon as we got close. The trout were moving fast also and wouldn't hold in one area very long so it was mostly run and gun fishing. D.O.A. root beer/chart. shad tails caught a lot of fish but Bone/diamond, glow/chart. and Texas roach colors worked to. There were a lot of other boats in the area so we had plenty of company on the South end of the lake. We witnessed one temper flair "water rage" I guess you call it, as the angler ran his big motor right through the gulls we were working. He then made an obscene gesture to the boat next to us as he headed East. If you can't take lots of boats close to you you don't need to fish the birds. Most of us understand the game and if you approach the flock on your trolling motor every things OK , just don't run your big motor right up to the birds and expect to be welcomed in. We caught a lot of small trout today and lost a few keepers right at the boat. The tides weren't in our favor as the tide didn't really start to fall about the time we had to leave. We did however manage a nice mess of trout fillets, I agree with Steve, Trout Almonddean!

5/24/2008 More wind than predicted
Bill Heugel came down today and gave the Red fish a shot with his fly rod. We had hopes of 10 mph winds or less as was predicted but that wasn't the case. I checked the local weather stations along Sabine lake this evening and found 15 mph gust and steady 13 mph winds were recorded. We fished the Louisiana side marshes in hopes of getting some relief from the wind but it was still a struggle. Bill managed to put 2 reds in the boat along with one small Speckled trout. The water was in good shape but there wasn't any feeding activity going on. Another set back was that the Sun didn't break out until about the time we called it a day making sight casting even more of a challenge. Bill is one tuff fisherman and had to blind cast all day in the wind and poor fly fishing conditions but his persistence payed off. The large fish we were in hopes of seeing never made an appearance but with the tide being as high and rising as it was we were happy to catch what we did. Catching fish is what we go for but it's the other things that make just getting out that much more enjoyable. For example we were working a grass line when we saw this birds nest nestled down in the Bull rushes, I assume it was a Red wing black birds but I'm not sure, the egg looked kind of big to me. Then there were the many Alligators we saw along with the variety of birds that live in the marsh. It's a whole nother world out in the marsh most people never see. Tight lines , Mike

No wind for a change and clear water!
The weather man was wrong about the temperature but was right about the wind. I had to go to Lake Charles Louisiana this morning to The gulf Coast Council fly fishing conclave until noon as a guest fly tier. As soon as I left I had an after noon fishing trip to run. Jeff Gamble and his son Casey met me at the house at 2:00pm. and we were fishing by 2:30pm. I felt there would be an afternoon bite and I was right. We started slow with a few small Reds and a keeper Flounder. Around 4:30pm we got on another school of small Reds that were 19 inches. We started working our way back up the lake from the Greens bayou area and crossed the lake to find gulls working over Specks and Reds. We caught fish up to 7:00pm, the Specks were solid fish with several going 21 inches. The Reds were mixed but there were several nice slot sized fish. We ended the day with 12 Trout, 6 Reds and one Flounder. Casey claimed the big fish title today with his 27 inch Red. Root beer/ Chart DOA shad tails and Assassin, Bone/Diamond Sea shad tails on 1/4 oz lead heads along with a chrome, blue back rattle trap caught all the fish. Not bad for a late start!
Looks like things are starting to kick off. Now is the time to book a date if you want to catch some fish before the hot weather gets here, Tight lines, Mike

Windy day to say the leastPreston and I had our minds made up Friday, we didn't care what the weather was like on Saturday we were going to fish one way or the other. We got out on the marsh flats about 8:00am this morning in hopes of fishing a very low tide this morning and maybe catching the slack wind as it was predicted to change around to the North some time today. Well we got to fish the low tide but the wind never got any lighter and never changed direction from the South. I didn't get to fish much from the platform as I was fighting the wind most of the time. Preston had his own battle going with the strong gusty winds that always seemed to blow his cast off course when it really counted. He had one Red on and had another large fish short strike and missed at least 4 more due to bad casting. I had one fish that looked to be in the 25 inch class nail a horny toad but I didn't get a good hook set and lost it. I was happy to see at least a dozen fish today. We saw most early on but as the tide rushed in with the wind we had trouble seeing them. The water clarity was poor to say the least from one end of Bessie Heights to the other? The grass has come back some what in several areas but it hasn't cleared the water yet. Hopefully the winds will calm down some and allow the silt to settle out in the next few weeks. When Preston and I got back to the boat ramp we noticed the water was teeming with small white crabs about the size of a nickle. If I was going to fish Sunday I would be casting something that resembled the crabs we saw. I'm sure the Reds and other fish will key on the swarm of forage that is flushing out into the larger bodies of water. As far a Sabine lake report goes the reef still seems to be producing on an incoming tide and when you can find birds working there have been catches of Trout coming from under them. Soft plastic in dark colors seem to be doing the best.
