6/26/2008 Red fish and Thunder storms
Daren Rubink and Mark Myers braved the weather today and made the drive from Houston looking for Red fish on the flats. There were many more thunder storms than Red fish today. We were fishing at daylight and made it to 11:30am before the 1st big thunderhead moved in. Daren made a great cast to one of the only Red fish we saw showing it's back today before we retreated to the ramp. It weighed 3-1/2 lb. and ate a spoon fly. Mark had a Red blow up on his Dalburg diver at 1st light but the hook missed it's mark. We took the boat out and went to eat lunch while the big storm passed through. After lunch we went back out and fished some more but never got any more shots at fish. Another big storm is moving in from Beaumont so we called it a day as the weather was rapidly deteriorating.I think one of the big factors in the poor bite today was that the tide wasn't nearly as low as predicted and never had any movement until around 3:00pm, it was high and dead still most of the day. Daren and Mark were great to fish with and really hung in there & never complained. They are welcome in my boat any day!

Big thunderstorms Saturday morningGot up at daylight so as to catch the low and falling tide but the thunderstorms were already on top of us.I finally left the house at 9:30am and got on the flats but it was to late. The tide had already bottomed out and was dead still,"not a good thing". The tide really didn't do much of any thing so I called it a day about 2:30pm with another line of thunderstorms on the horizon. I saw a few fish but it was just plain dead on the flats. There is this certain sound the flats have when the bite is on. I guess it happened at daylight because it sure didn't happen when I finally got out there. But as we say," you never know until you go"

6/20/2008 Been gone on vacationI haven't posted in a week and I'm finally getting back in the groove. I took my family to Yellowstone national park last week. Stacy and I had been there around 22 years ago and now it was time to take Preston and revisit. Some things have changed but for the most part the park has been well maintained. The weather was diverse to say the least. Two days of partly cloudy Sky's and a light rain then the clod weather moved in. The snow set in and stayed for 3 days! Some of it was light but one day it really got with the program.Preston had never been a real snow and got to experience a 6 inch snow flurry. When it first started the visibility was down to 75 yards at the most but it soon thinned out. We were on a trail ride, scheduled to be on horse back but was changed to covered wagon due to the bad conditions. When the Snow fall lightened up we were treated to a beautiful scene, that of a soft blanket of pure white snow covering the whole valley we were riding through. The Bison had snow on their backs and a Black Wolf ran across the trail silhouetted on the pure white back ground as we leisurely moved on. We were also treated to a visit from a Black Bear during our Cowboy cook out at the end of the ride. We really had a great trip even with the colder temperatures. We saw all manner of Flora and Fauna, it was also a treat to see some of the new born animals playing with their siblings. I got to fish for a short time and managed to catch Two nice Brown Trout in the 10" size. I really liked the
Orvis 7 piece 5 wt. frequent flier travel rod matched with the Battenkill mid arbor reel. The set up packs neatly in your carry on luggage. The fly I used was an Elks hair Caddis pattern, about a size 12 or 14, I'm' not sure because I hardly ever use a hook smaller than a size8 on any of my flies I use on the coast. Any way I will try to post some pictures soon from our trip. Looking to getting back on the water this week end. Hopefully the Red fish will be on the flats and the wind will be light.
