7/25/2007 Remnants of hurricane Dolly make for a challenging day!
Terry Morgan, his 10 year old son Scott and Todd Safford made the trip down from Lufkin Texas. They had never fished Sabine lake before and wanted to test the waters. The birds were working early on the North end of the lake over schooling Lady fish and trout. We went through a lot of under sized fish but Scott started off the day with a nice 3-1/2 pound trout while fishing a swim bait under a popping cork. The wind was predicted to be 7 mph but it was building with the Sun as it rose higher in the sky. I wanted to take advantage of the shad bite that was going on in the mid lake area but the white capped waves hid all indications of bait or feeding activity. We ran to the Louisiana shore line to seek relief from the wind and found beautiful clear water near Garrison ridge. It wasn't long before we found some schooling trout with Red fish mixed in and put a few more fish in the boat with most being just undersized. The tide was starting to gain momentum so we headed South of Stewts island and tried to drift some live bait in 6 foot of water. We were rewarded with Two heavy trout and a few Gafftop catfish. Scott had a blast doing battle with the 5 pound cats that really tested his drag and stamina. The drift we wanted to make was hindered by the wind and tide. The tide was falling but the wind was blowing the opposite way. The end result was we would hardly cover any ground, it was almost like having the anchor out. The wind and waves were getting to the point of being unfishable so we ran up the Neches river and fished some cuts off Bessie Heights marsh. There we caught some more heavy trout ,Todd broke the Red fish drought and put a nice slot Red in the cooler to finish the day. Coming back to the marina was a very ruff ride to say the least. The waves coming off the lake into the intercoastel canal were big and steep. I'm glad we weren't on the South side of the lake and had to make a run across to get back home.
The guy's took home a nice bag of fillets and a lot fun memories. I know I had a blast watching young Scott really put it on the older fellows, way to go Scott!
We caught most fish on a Storm swim bait but Glow/ Chrt. D.O.A. shad tails caught fish also along with live Shad and Mullet. Tight lines, Mike
