11/18/2008 Blown Away Again by 8 mph wind, HA!
Well the weather man was wrong again. What was predicted to be a nice 8 mph wind turned out to be an 18 mph blow. Bill Heugel and Don McMurry were in hopes of fly fishing the bird activity on Sabine lake and taking advantage of the user friendly bite but that wasn't the case. The strong East wind was blowing right down the lake and had the Louisiana side of the lake all muddied up. We fished some in the gale where I had caught some nice fish the week before but the wind was just to much for the fly rods and we headed back up North in hopes of finding some shelter from the wind. We found some very nice clear water in coffee ground cove that was some what protected. Bill stayed with the fly rod but Don joined me and fished a spinning reel.Don landed a very nice 17 inch flounder on a D.O.A. glow/Chrt. jerk bait and I boated a hefty Five pound trout on the same bait. I released the big sow trout but Don wanted grilled Flounder for supper so we kept it. My hats off to Bill , he's a die hard fly fisher and never gave in to the wind and stayed with the long rod all day! 99% of the day was casting practice but we still enjoyed the time on the water. We saw a lot of ducks and Loons on the lake with Geese in the air along with some brilliant Scarlet Ibises working the marsh flats. We did run up the Sabine river and try a few spots but the water was very muddy and the bite was no better. Today was one of those you pay your dues days. Hopefully the next time the weather man will get the forecast right.
Tight lines, Mike
