Another Hot Day On The Water 7/25/2009
I fished with Jimmy Carrow today and got a lot of laughs out of him. Jimmy's sense of humour isn't what you run across on a daily basis. The bite was almost non existent the 1st half of the day for us as the tide was nearly bottomed out when we left the dock. We managed a few small trout and gafftops but just couldn't find any thing going on from one end of the lake to the other. Jimmy was discouraged but I insisted if we hung in there the bite would turn on after the tide started moving back in.I did manage one nice 4 lb. trout around 11:30am but it was the only one around. After pictures we released her back to hopefully spawn again and keep her superior genes in the pool.Around noon we picked up two nice reds along a grassy shore line that had a lot of bait working along the edges. Shortly there after a few Terns started working an area of the lake near by and the bite was on. I landed another nice slot red and keeper trout. Jimmy all the while is only catching small trout and gafftops. Finally Jimmy stuck a solid fish and the drag started squalling. After a few trips around the boat we landed a nice 27" Red that went 6lb. We finished the day with a limit of Reds and a few keeper trout.Glow /Chrt shad tails under a popping cork worked for us.
While fishing earlier in the day, I traded rods with Jimmy and he immediately started casting up into the marsh cane. He exclaimed"whats going on I'm casting like I've been doing all day and now I'm casting 20 foot more with the same effort"? The difference was the rod. He was now using a CastAway HG40 Titanium graphite rod. You can catch a fish on any rod but with a really good rod casting more distance with less effort will put more fish in the boat at the end of the day most every time.
Tight lines, Mike
