Memorial day in the marsh
Preston and I made a quick run in the marsh this afternoon on a scouting trip.
The flats were quiet with some bait moving but no predators working. The water clarity was fair at best with some pockets of cleaner water here and there. The moss is growing in some places but there are still large areas with just a mud bottom. Preston missed one Red that was after his Ribbit frog and broke off another one fishing a curl tail and legged lizard.I thought we did fairly good for only 2 hours on the water. The water was to murky to sight cast and the wind was giving us a hard time so all Preston did was blind cast the key points of the grass line and pockets. If we had spent the day we may have done fairly well but we were just looking at conditions this evening. Hopefully next weekend we can spend more time on the flats.

Saturday 5/29/10
The boys had a great day on the water!

Dennis Moore and his son Trace wanted to spend some quality time on the water this Memorial weekend. My son Preston is the same age as Trace so we all went out to look for Specks and Reds. We struggled at first as the moon was full and bright with a falling tide at night. The fish probably fed all night and weren't hungry at 1st light. We managed a few gafftops and small trout.
I figured if things were going to pick up it would be around noon, I was right. The tide was coming in strong and the bite was on. The trout and reds started busting shrimp all around the boat. We caught fish on DOA glow/chrt shad tails under popping corks, chrome/blue rattle traps and the always reliable HoganAr's. Naturally the reds liked the hoganar but the rattle trap boated some nice trout also.We had to leave at 2:00pm while the trout and reds were still working but we did have 11 trout that were most all 16 to 18 inches and 3 slot sized reds.
The best water clarity was in the mid lake area on the N/W side. The LA shore line was muddy from one end to the other and the reef area was muddy also.
We all had a great day, hope to see Dennis and Trace again soon.
