Sabine Lake fly and conventional tackle fishing reports & photos

8/7/2010Finally something new !
Preston and I have fished a few times lately but had nothing to really report. Most times we fished the wind kept us from fishing where we wanted, that wasn't the case today for the most part.
We fished the annual O.C.A.R.C tournament today in hopes of catching a 27 inch Red.
27 inches is the maximum length of Red fish that can be weighed in. This really tightens up the contest at the scales. We caught red fish most of the day with a few nice 16 to 18 inch Speckled trout mixed in. I came really close to a tournament sized Red fish but it was 1/4 inch to long, it weighed 7LB. and that is usually in the money but no dice today. Preston caught several keeper Reds today but nothing close to a weighing sized one. There were many small rat Reds working schools of shad with some of their bigger relatives. Preston had a nice multi. spot rat pictured above. The water was beautiful all over the lake but the best water was on the North end and that was where the bait and fish were. We never caught a fish South of the Rainbow bridge.
All in all we had a great day. we didn't keep fish but if we had we would have had 4 limits of Reds and 8 keeper trout. Hoganars did a number on the Reds with spinner baits and soft plastic under a popping cork coming in 2nd. glo/chrt. shad tails, Red glitter Browns Devil eyes and electric chicken spinner baits were the colors we used.
Hopefully I will have more time to post reports in the near future.
