Marsh to the lake, fishing was tuff
But we got it done!
Bill Heugel and Don McMurry booked 2 days with me this past week, the bite had been good most of the summer so we gave it a shot, one day in Bessie Heights and one day on lake Sabine. I pre fished the marsh the day before and saw good numbers of Reds and clear water.Dickie Colburn said they struggled in the lake a few days before but I thought the bite would come back by Friday. There was an abnormally high tide Thursday as we headed to the marsh, even higher than the day before. We didn't see the numbers of fish I had seen the day before but Don and Bill did manage to put a few fish in the boat, keep in mind that they only use fly fishing tackle so the odds are in the fishes favor from the start.
Friday the tide was even higher than Thursday and the N/E wind was blowing a good clip unlike the weather forecast had led us to believe. Fortunately Coffee ground cove was protected enough Don and Bill could use their fly rods. I had several blowup's with conventional tackle but just couldn't make contact with the hooks. Don and Bill had a few blowup's also but the fish just weren't hungry.We had bait all over us and the water was the clearest I've seen in a very long time but the fish just had lock jaw. We moved around working our way South. Bill boated a trout and I stuck a few keeper Flounder. The wind kicked back up so much the fly rods were useless so we ran back to the North side where Bill set a new fly fishing record for my boat. He landed and released 3 Needle fish with the fly rod, possibly a Sabine lake record?
I managed a few Trout and a nice Red fish so we did have fish to eat at the end of the day.
The fishing was tuff but the sun was really ruff. I think we drank 18 bottles of water along with a few sodas that day.It was good to fish with seasoned anglers and renew old friendships.I fished the old tried and true DOA popping cork rig attached to a Browns Red glitter devil eye threaded on a 1/4 oz lead head. I was using a CastAway 7' Skeleton light spinning rod which allowed me to make very long cast and cover a lot of ground and put the bait in front of more potential strikes.
