Sunny Blue Bird Day

The wind hasn't given me a break over the past month and a half. It seems every time I get a chance to fish the wind's blowing 20 mph out of the North or South. Preston has been after me to take him fishing for a while so I decided to give it a shot today after church. North wind still blowing with Blue bird sky's and a very low tide weren't my idea of ideal conditions but we went any way. I had flown over the lake Friday with my brother and noticed Coffee ground cove was very clear with clouds of bait easily seen from above, so that's where we headed. The corner of East pass was kind of protecting us from the wind so the casting was easy and the water was still clear with lots of small shad swimming about. We fished for about 2-1/2 hrs. but the bite just wasn't on. We managed a big Gafftop catfish and one nice slot sized Red and missed a few short strikes. The popping cork with Texas Roach soft plastic was what got bit. Preston and I threw some other baits but the popping cork proved it's self again.
A word of caution. Preston and I wade fished a short time in knee deep water and saw several small Sting Rays as we moved along. I guess they were about 8" across. Even being small they can inflict a painful sting if you step on one. My advice is to do what we call the Sting Ray shuffle. Just drag your feet across the bottom as you move along,if you cross a ray it will swim away when you bump it. When you step in the middle of one is when you get popped!
If the wind lays the fishing has been good all over the lake on most any bait you have confidence in,how ever I did observe from the air Friday the Louisiana shore line at Willow bayou on down to the Causeway was muddy. The West side of the lake was clear from Pleasure Island marina on up to the North end.
Hope this helps, Capt. Michael Rector
